For some months we have been conducting an online poll on whether to introduce a ban on drinking in public in Auchtermuchty.
Most towns in Fife now have such a ban and it is thought that introducing this legislation to Auchtermuchty might help to reduce unsocial behaviour. Exceptions can be made to allow people to enjoy a drink in the sunshine at the festival or to have a celebratory dram at the Cross on Hogmanay.
There are many arguments for and against such a ban but the overwhelming response via the online survey was in favour.
We had originally hoped that a review of the bye-laws would happen at the end of 2009 but due to difficulties in implementing the new Licensing Act, Fife Council will not be reviewing the bye-law until later this year, 2010, at the earliest. When this happens the Community Association will hold a public meeting at which everyone will be able to make their views known.
